What are your tutoring methods?

The three most common problems I encounter are:

  1. "I don't understand"
  2. "I don't know how to do it"
  3. "I can't remember"

To tackle these difficulties, I help the student to:

  1. Understand through lively discussion and analogies.
  2. Practice through weekly homework.
  3. Remember through memory tricks and acronymns.

When are you available?

I am currently available for lessons:

9am - 9pm
Monday to Sunday

These are general times for my availability and every week is different, so please contact me to discuss in more detail.

All lessons happen in my home. Please see the contact page for more details.

Do you give homework?

Practice is an essential part of success with most things and Maths is certainly no exception, so I set homework at the end of every lesson.

I recognise that students also get homework from school, so I work with you to set a realistic amount.

If the student has good control over their own learning process, I may not set homework.

I usually set homework from a standard exercise book. This keeps questions plentiful and consistent.

These are available to buy using the links above, from me or borrow for the duration of our lessons together.

What if I'm late for a lesson?

Please contact me as soon as you can to let me know. I may be able to extend the lesson to still accommodate a full hour depending on the circumstances.

What if I can't attend a lesson?

If the student cannot attend a session, I ask that they give me at least 24 hours notice. If this is not possible, the lesson is chargeable.

However, I do recognise there are exceptions - circumstances can change at the last minute - and in such situations I exercise my discretion.

How often should I have lessons?

I usually recommend 1 hour of tuition a week. Over several months, this can reap huge rewards.

The amount of contact time needed is dependent on a wide range of factors including barriers to learning, the target grade and, most crucially, how close the exams are!

Tuition through the whole academic year may not be suitable and I have tutored students who have really benefited from a small block of lessons (for example, one hour a week over a 6-8 week period).

How long is a lesson?

Lessons are usually 1 hour. If the exams are close or if a student feels they would benefit, I have been known to give tutoring in a 2 hour block with a short break in the middle.

What if the student doesn't improve?

Every student has areas they find difficult, but sometimes a student lacks the basic motivation to do the work. In these cases, there is nothing I can do - the student is always the one who must put in the effort. My role is enabler and facilitator.

In some rare cases, either due to a lack of motivation or other factors the student may make little or no progress over several weeks. In these cases I will notify the parents as soon as possible and appropriate action can be taken.

Can you guarantee a pass?

No. The student is the one who does the work - my role is to help and support the student in the learning process.

Can you help getting past papers?

Yes, I can supply you with past papers.

What should the student bring to lessons?

In short, as much relevant material as possible:

  1. Exercise books they are working from
  2. Questions that they are having difficulty with
  3. Homework from the last session (hopefully completed!)
  4. Any Maths reports or results of assessments
  5. Their own calculator
